General principles of wall decoration and useful tips
Whatever the idea of kitchen decor you like, before the start of the decorating process, consider the following general principles and recommendations for decorating walls:
- The most suitable places for decorating with wall decoration are: the piers between the windows, the area above the dining table, above the kitchen unit, above the sink, extractor hood, and any stand-alone furniture, as well as in niches and ledges.
- When planning the placement of wall decoration or the order of the layout of the elements of the wall composition, do not forget about the principle of symmetry.
- Try not to get involved in decorating the walls of the kitchen, if in its interior so there are many complex details. On small kitchen and at all should remember the saying “better is less, yes better.”
- Of course, you need to choose a wall decor based on the style and color scheme of the kitchen interior, especially paying attention to the color of the decorated wall and the objects surrounding it.
- In most cases, paintings, panels, posters and other decorations for the walls should be hung at about eye level.
And some more useful tips:
- If there is a thing in your kitchen that stands out from the overall color scheme of the interior, select a wall decor in which both the color of this object and the basic colors of the kitchen are present.
- If you have a beautiful decor item, but, as you think, it doesn’t fill the wall section enough, then it can be combined with smaller accessories, such as paintings, plates, and smaller mirrors.
12 wall decoration ideas
Idea 1. Composition of saucers and plates
If your kitchen is in traditional style, then you can decorate one of the walls with saucers and plates.
This decor will look great in the dining area, in the design of the walls between the windows, in the niches and on the ledges, under / above the wall sconces, over the consoles or the headset, if it is not too high.
Here are some tips to help you create a well-coordinated composition:
- The saucers should “call out” not only with each other, but also with neighboring objects of decor and the interior as a whole. Combine different-colored plates with each other can color, print, relief of the rim and / or shape.
- It is desirable that an equal interval be maintained between the plates.
- Plates can form a figure, can be hung symmetrically or deliberately randomly, or around a center (for example, a large dish, clock, picture or mirror).
- Before you hang the plates on the wall, you should assemble the composition on the floor, then cut out the outline of each saucer from paper and hang it on the wall (or you can simply circle the plates with a pencil on the wall). Thus, you will have several paper circles that will tell you where a plate should hang.
- If you have a beautiful set that you use from time to time for its intended purpose, then you can arrange them on a narrow display shelf as in this photo.
- If desired, plates can be painted with your own hands, following our step-by-step master class.

I have a small kitchen in a classic style, for a long time I want to give it a new interesting highlight. I didn’t even think that there are so many different ways to decorate this small room, where every housewife can spend so much time. I really wanted to experiment with the plates, I think it will be quite interesting!
Useful article. Some ideas are really original and unusual, for example, a kitchen with mirrors, or with chalk wallpaper on which to draw. This is worth thinking about!
Very interesting article, especially liked the idea with mirrors, you can artificially increase the space, the idea with photo wallpaper also attracted. It will be very interesting to look at the kitchen decorated with plates, this design is suitable for travel lovers, but I didn’t like the idea of cutting boards and ceiling sockets.
Useful and interesting information, accompanied by elegant photographs of interiors. Especially liked the simple and stylish ideas with chalk wallpaper and vinyl stickers - be sure to take note.
Beautiful, worthy ideas, but I didn’t like vinyl stickers. And so, it is beautiful, luxurious to look for ideas with mirrors, with plates and, of course, with photo wallpapers.
Karina, thank you for your opinion)
Denis, thanks for the assessment) come to us again, we have a lot of interesting things that appear every day.
We thought)) Thank you for your appreciation!
we like the idea of plates most)
I didn’t really like the idea with mirrors on the kitchen walls. I am more attracted to the ideas of decor, which combine beauty with practicality. For example, the shelf on which a row of beautiful jars with spices or cereals is located looks great on a wall.
Of course, the idea of a glass apron I, as a housewife, killed outright - to wash this design masterpiece will have three times a day. But I was interested in volumetric letters on the wall - the kitchen looks more interesting with them, plus - the child will start teaching them :). While in my dining area I was hung with photos in - practical, washable monochrome wallpapers turned out to be extremely boring and simply required additional elements of decor.
Thanks for the chic article :)
My wife and I moved to a new apartment and arranged our kitchen according to the 8th idea. We bought wooden carved shelves and made them with homemade candlesticks and paintings that we did not want to nail onto the wall. I also liked the idea with the photo wallpaper)
Definitely like the article!))
A good article, a lot of ideas and, most importantly, a lot of good examples. We in the kitchen are going to use the idea of 5- to hang a composition from pictures or, if we change our mind, to make photo wallpapers, as in idea 2.
I didn’t like the ideas: 1 (the mirrors are distracting, especially if they hang as pictures separately from each other, the image is uneven and fragmentary); 3 (wooden boards are difficult to harmonize with any style and look dull); 6 (not serious and superfluous, eyes will ruffle from small drawings everywhere).
The idea of ceiling sockets is simply brilliant. Inexpensive material, and the effect is very unusual. Most for a rented apartment. The walls are painted completely white, and I want to make the sockets red and pistachio. Thanks for the great tip.
Roman, thank you! We are glad that it was useful)
Katerina, and thank you for comment
send pictures as you implement 😉
Excellent article, very interesting, creative ideas. Especially not an ordinary decision - chalky wallpaper, this design is now very fashionable, it is often found in lovely cozy cafes, so somehow it did not occur to design its kitchen, but it looks very cool and stylish. In fact, for any of the proposed options, it does not require much effort, the main thing is to show imagination.
Catherine, thank you! Yes, chalky wallpaper is now fashionable)
Just a masterpiece! I especially liked the first two ideas, just 9 is good, because the clock in the kitchen is very necessary ...) I want to make it happen in my kitchen ...))
Olena, thanks for the feedback!
About the wallpaper I can not agree, for a year they will darken, because in the kitchen to prepare food and stuff. Better tile with a pattern.
Very interesting collections. And we are all wallpaper monochrome glue but we are suffering with paint .. Look how many interesting things! Already ordered one familiar letter on the wall, and her husband - carved shelves. Thanks for the inspiration, great site.
