In this material you will find 17 practical tips and 85 photo ideas that will help you organize a space from scratch or optimize the already established "system".
17 kitchen storage solutions
1. Equip the primary storage location in the work area.
Let's start our guide to organizing storage in the kitchen, perhaps with basic principles. And here is one of them - everything you need to keep close at hand.
- Ideally, the work surface should be between the sink and the stove, and its optimal length should be about 90 cm. Accordingly, all utensils, appliances and products necessary for cooking every day should be stored above and below the work surface, as well as under the stove.
The more in demand this or that thing / product, the closer it should be to the desktop. At the same time the tabletop itself should be almost empty.
2. Sort and store items / products by category
Storage by categories and subcategories is another basic principle from which order and convenience of a kitchen begins.
- Objects of the same type should be collected in one (!) Place, even on one shelf, but separately from objects of other categories. So you can quickly find the right things and easy to clean up the closets.
Even visually, shelves with supplies and utensils sorted into categories look neat and beautiful. Despite the evidence of this principle, not all follow it and not always. For example, we often store pans interspersed with baking pans or pans. And, say, we put bottles with vegetable oil somewhere between a dry breakfast and macaroni.
- Of course, this rule has exceptions. For example, sugar and salt can be stored as well as with seasonings and spices, and on the table in the salt shaker and the sugar bowl. Storage of fruits and vegetables -
This is a completely separate story, because different types of fruits require different conditions. In general, the principle works everywhere and in everything - from the storage of food in the refrigerator and to the storage of dishes in a cupboard.
Of course, there is no need to get involved in sorting things into subcategories and subcategories, otherwise it will be inconvenient to search and remove things.

3. Store items in trays and containers
To store things by category in cabinets and drawers it is convenient to use all kinds of baskets, boxes, trays and dividers.
4. If you are designing a kitchen from scratch, rely on drawers and systems.
The lower tier of the kitchen should be almost completely equipped with drawers, and some of the upper cabinets should also be added with pull-out shelves. So you can use every corner of your kitchen, quickly find the right things and lay them in places without squatting.
5. Store things mostly not in piles, but in rows
Store and fold things not in a horizontal position on top of each other (piles), but vertically one after another (in rows), then you can easily find and retrieve the necessary items without disturbing the established order in the cabinet.
- To keep things upright, use dividers, trays, boxes, and hooks.
This life hacking for storage in the kitchen is simple and ingenious, but not always obvious. Especially when it comes to storing a stock of kitchen towels and napkins - because textiles, unlike boxes and cans, do not stand upright. To solve this problem, simply fold matter into a rectangle or roll.
The principle of vertical storage works in almost everything, only deep dishes and containers can and should be stacked.
6. In a small kitchen, you must use non-standard storage.
Here are a few storage ideas in the kitchen in non-standard places:
- Cabinet doors - you can glue hooks on them or attach wall holders. It is true that only light objects can be stored on the doors, otherwise there is a risk of breaking the hinges. It is also important to fasten the hooks and holders so that they themselves and the objects they hold do not rest on the shelves, otherwise the door will not close.
- The ends and the outer walls of kitchen furniture - they are good in that they will withstand not only towels and pot holders, but also heavy objects: knives, cutting boards, pans and pans. The main thing is to choose reliable shelves / holders and fasten them carefully so as not to spoil the look of the kitchen. Below are photo ideas for storing things on the outer walls of furniture.
- Internal walls of cabinets - It is convenient to hang on the hooks of measuring spoons and nozzles from electrical appliances, which are not needed very often.
- Place under wall cabinets - here you can hang a narrow shelf for storing spices as in the photo below ...
... or screw the lids of the cans to the bottom of the wall-mounted cabinet in order to screw the jars with spices or bulk products into them.
7. Engage the corner of the kitchen at 100%
Often in the corner of the kitchen are formed "dead zones", which are not involved in any way because of their inaccessibility. In order for this place to be used 100%, you should equip the corner cabinet of the headset with sliding systems - baskets, shelves, shelves or carousels.
8. Life hacking for a small kitchen - wardrobe to the ceiling
On small kitchen You can maximize your storage space with extra lockers that extend all the way to the ceiling. Then in the upper boxes will be able to store things that are rarely used. For example, it may be a holiday set, tablecloths, banks for preservation and so on.
Ok if kitchen set designed initially high (see photo above), but if not, you can fill the cabinet top with nice baskets and drawers.
And the third tier can be built with your own hands from the board and the supports in the form of bottle holders as shown in the photo below.
9. Embed drawers in the kitchen base
Another life hacking for a small kitchen is the installation of drawers in the base of the headset. It is very convenient to store all sorts of molds, pallets, rolling pins, stocks of wine and even pet food.
10. Engage the walls and the apron
Store on railing devicesAll kinds of banks and even the equipment is very convenient - everything is in sight and at hand. On the other hand, roof rails often create a feeling of clutter and disorder in the kitchen, hide a beautiful apron under themselves and complicate cleaning (after all, everything that hangs on the wall quickly becomes covered with dust!).
- Therefore, we advise you not to get involved in railing systems and hang only super-demanded objects and products on the wall, for example, salt, spices, paper towels, paddles, tablet / phone holder.
In this collection of photos you can see successful examples of kitchen fittings with roof rails.
But stored on the wall on a magnetic holder knife set can and should be. After all, as the blades spoil less, and the cook is very convenient to choose, remove the desired device.
By the way, the magnetic holder for knives is easy to do by hand. To do this, you just need to cut several shallow round holes on a wooden plank, then paste neodymium magnets into them and, finally, hang the board on the wall. Voila, the knife holder is ready.
See the material on the topic: Making fridge magnets (and not only) from improvised, waste and natural materials
In addition to the railing to use the walls for storage help perforated boards of hardboard or steel. Just paint the board in the desired color, add hooks to it and hang it on the wall. Photo ideas for wall-mounted storage facilities for products and products are presented in the next slider.
And, of course, shelves will help to organize wall storage of things. It is desirable that they were chosen to match the tone of the wall or kitchen furniture. Also, as with rails, with shelves it is important not to overdo it - they quickly become dusty and overload the interior.
11. Organize the space under the sink
The place under the sink is great for placing trash cans, cleaning products, sponges and rags. Here are some ideas and tips on how to optimize this space:
- Insert one bar (a bar for a wardrobe will fit) into the cabinet under the sink and place sprays and spray guns on it.
- Screw a retractable container to one of the walls, for example, Ikei.
- Hang hooks for towels or organizers for storage of sponges, rags and other devices on the door.
- Use small shelves with shelves and drawers.
- It is desirable that the bin was retractable.
12. Use not round cans and trays, but square or rectangular ones.
It is better to store dry products in rectangular and square cans / containers, as they stand up with each other more carefully and more compactly than round ones. The board is relevant for all storage accessories (baskets, trays, containers), as well as household appliances (coffee machine, stationary blenders, scales, etc.).
13. Buy a sink organizer
Dishwashing detergent, sponges and brushes are very convenient to store in silicone or plastic organizers. Thus, you will free up space near the sink and protect the drying tabletop / fender from flowing drops.
14. Use furniture with built-in drawers and shelves.
For example, it could be a table with drawers under the table top, a bench with built-in boxes under the seat, or a bar with shelves in the underfold.
15. If there is some free space in the kitchen - use additional racks, consoles and carts
High shelving help out when there is not enough storage space, but there is no storage room in the kitchen.
If there is no space for shelving, try building a storage system around a doorway or window.
The cart is good for its compactness, spaciousness and portability.
16. Use plug-in shelves and shelves
Such a small trick allows you to use the entire height of the cabinets and get additional usable space literally from nowhere. You can buy such shelves in Ikea (Variera series).
17. Keep the refrigerator at 30% empty
In a packed refrigerator, it is very difficult to restore order, find the right products, monitor new “supplies” of food and promptly remove expired illiquid.
- To make it easier for you to keep from buying the next unnecessary jam or sauce, make it a rule to keep no more than three varieties of the same product on the shelf of the refrigerator.
By the way, this recommendation is also applicable in the grocery storage department.

Thanks for the ideas - because, where, where, and in the kitchen a lot of small things that need to be stored somewhere. It will be necessary to take a closer look at what you can organize at home.
I liked the idea of storing spices in jars under the shelves. It will be necessary for me to implement it in the kitchen, the kitchen is small and the wife constantly complains that there is no way to identify small jars and boxes)
We must always get rid of excess rubbish, then order will be everywhere and always. With jars is a really good idea, but the pans hanging in sight are in my opinion this is nonsense.
Straight at so much everything is ingenious and simple, a very interesting idea with jars for spices, and indeed there are a lot of cool decisions. I am pleased to take a note. For small kitchens, just a storehouse of useful ideas.
Good article, you can still make lockers to the very ceiling, to store in them rarely used things.
This is not an article, it is just an encyclopedia for the hostess. Very interesting tips. I liked the “pegboard” - very unusual and functional.
Reading the article immediately found flaws in my kitchen. Thanks to these articles, our life is getting better!
It would seem: everything is so simple, but at the same time very often we do not pay special attention to details that can significantly improve the interior of the kitchen. She found many interesting tips that I will certainly try to apply in the future.
come to us again 🙂
We are glad that the material was useful)
Thanks for such a high rating!
we propose to store in this way only the covers from the pans, and not the pans themselves))
thank you. Come again!
Great idea to use the door to store the covers on the hangers for towels and cutting boards, she would never have guessed. My imagination was enough just to hang on the doors on the hooks every little thing like skimmers and corollas.I urgently implement, and then forever these covers interfere!
After reading the article, “it was combed hands” - I can't wait to implement a couple of ideas in my kitchen! Especially admired the idea of storing spices (with fastening the covers to the shelves). I was just puzzled how to organize my odorous teabags-jars! Thanks for the advice!
Good day. I read it. It looks nice, of course, but ... there is little that can be applied in the kitchen where it is constantly cooked. Covers and other things to hang on the door - by experience - after half a year all the fastenings of the door you simply throw out, because the doors and their fasteners are not designed for additional weight !. Next: even a toaster, standing 50 cm from the stove, has to be washed every week, and what do you have with all sorts of cans and other things that are not hanging under the protection of the cabinets !!! - dust, steam and other waste from cooking will simply settle on the whole not closed small things. Spices near the stove or sink - they become damp, and at least as much as they are closed, there is no way out of the condensate effect. So everything has to be hidden in the cabinets. So think carefully before you put all your ideas into action. I wish you a kitchen, everything can be placed on the bark!
Saved to bookmarks! A whole bunch of goodies! Thank you so much !!!!
Sonia, thank you for your kind words! 🙂
I am a new user and noted below that the “site” answers the commentators, but for some articles I have so far seen only “thanks for the good feedback”. But I would like all the same answer to such comments as this. If the site is about improving the kitchen world, then it is worth analyzing the expediency of various unusual ideas. For example, it really seems to me that it’s not the best idea to put something next to the slab that is smeared with grease. There was an experience with a fridge.
