Design and layout of square kitchen

Square kitchen design

The square shape is the most successful for the kitchen, including for small. Of course, much depends on the size, but in general, we can say that if the room has a size of more than 3 × 3 m, then almost all types of layouts will be available here. There are many combinations of placement of equipment, cabinets and furniture, but all of them can be divided into several types:

  • Single row;
  • Double row;
  • L-shaped;
  • U-shaped;
  • Island;
  • Peninsular.

In this article we will consider in detail all these options for layouts except double row, as it is more suitable for arrangement narrow and elongated kitchensrather than square.

Single row furniture arrangement

This implies the placement of kitchen cabinets along one wall, while the dining table is placed opposite the headset or closer to the window.

Planning recommended:

  • If the kitchen is small, say 3 × 3 m;
  • If you want to leave more space for arranging a spacious dining area;
  • Subject to availability in the kitchen of the island;
  • If the kitchen you want to put a sofa to rest.

Pros: A single-line headset is compact, simple and versatile.

Minuses: If you line up three working points - a stove, a sink and a refrigerator - in one row, be prepared for frequent back and forth rushes during cooking.

Hint: headsets with an additional third tier or with an increased second will allow you to store more things in it or hide the duct pipe behind the facades.

Below is an example of the design of a square kitchen with a linear layout and sofa.

L-shaped (corner) arrangement of furniture

L-shaped layout - a win-win for any square kitchen - both small and large.

Pros: Corner Kitchen It is good because it uses two walls and an angle between them, and also makes it possible to arrange a stove, sink and refrigerator according to the “working triangle” principle, while leaving enough space for the dining area.

Tips:

  • To visually “unload” the interior of a small square kitchen, you can leave one wall without wall cabinets or hang open shelves instead.
  • To equip the corner of the kitchen with a sink or stove, to organize a workplace or a convenient storage cabinet here, it is best to choose a set with a trapezoid-shaped corner module.

Next, the photo shows an example of a corner kitchen design with an area of 10.2 square meters. meters.

U-shaped kitchen

U-shaped layout - Another great option for a square-shaped kitchen that uses three walls and two corners between them.

Planning recommended for:

Pros: The main advantage is convenience, because work surfaces and cabinets seem to embrace the chefs - this allows you to cook, making a minimum of movement in the kitchen. And the placement of the letter P at the window makes it possible to wash the dishes or to cook, looking at the street, and not at the wall.

Minuses: Not every square kitchen has the opportunity to build kitchen furniture in a U-shape. For example, it may interfere with access to a balcony at one wall and a doorway - at another, a small area and technical difficulties in carrying communications, say, to a window. This is especially true of the transfer of the gas stove, exhaust duct and washing.

Tips:

  • Theoretically, even in a 3 by 3 m kitchen, a U-shaped furniture layout is possible. But then a full-fledged dining group will have to be replaced by an elegant table for 2 people or a bar counter.
  • The passage between the side cabinets must be at least 120 cm (in extreme cases, 100 cm).
  • So that the space does not seem cluttered with furniture, the walls and facades of the headset should be chosen in bright colors (or even one tone). The second way to “unload” the interior is to hang a couple of open shelves instead of wall cabinets or leave the wall empty.
  • If the kitchen is not spacious enough, then to put a standard 4-seater table here, the U-shaped set should be designed very compactly. For example, one of its sides may be shorter.

An example of a 3 × 3 m square kitchen design with a U-shaped layout is shown below (scroll!).

Kitchen with an island

The set is built in one or two rows, L or P-shaped can be supplemented an islandwhich is capable of combining the functions of a bar counter and work surface with a stove and / or sink (or without them).

Planning recommended for:

  • Spacious kitchens from 20 sq. M. meters.
  • Kitchen-living room, when the dining area can be brought to the living room or make the island not only working, but also a dining table.
  • "Working" kitchens, when the apartment has a separate dining room.

Pros: The kitchen with the island is convenient as no other, because it allows not only to build a "working triangle", but also to remain open for communication with the household or guests during cooking.

Minuses: To place an island, a suite, and a full-fledged dining area in the kitchen, it is necessary that the kitchen area be at least 20 square meters. meters In other cases, the island will have to either give up or provide places for meals for 2-4 people. Another disadvantage of the island kitchen is the need for repairs with a rise in the floor level for mounting a sink or a stove. Particularly difficult tasks of repairing the kitchen with the island are the transfer of the gas stove, exhaust duct and sink.

Tips:

  • As a rule, in a square kitchen, a table-island should also be square as shown in the following photo selection.
  • Square island in the interior of a square kitchen
  • The distance from the island to the headset or any other furniture should be at least 100 cm.
  • In order not to complicate repairs, the island should be equipped with an electric hob or a small 120-liter refrigerator.

Peninsula Kitchen

A peninsula kitchen is a more compact alternative to island planning. Unlike an island, a peninsula can be leaned against a wall and / or headset.

Planning recommended for:

  • Small kitchens in which the dining table can be replaced by a peninsula table.
  • Spacious kitchens.
  • Kitchen-living room, when the dining area can be brought to the living room.
  • "Working" kitchens, when the apartment has a dining room.

Pros: The kitchen with the peninsula is convenient for cooking and at the same time more compact due to the fact that one side of it is leaning against the wall and / or the rest of the furniture.

Minuses: The peninsula loses a little in the convenience of the island, since it cannot be bypassed from all sides. As a rule, the peninsula plays the role of a desktop, a place for meals and a place to store things, which means that it cannot fully replace the dining table either in terms of capacity or convenience.

Tips:

  • The same recommendations are relevant to the peninsula as for the table-island.

Useful details

  • In the interior of a square kitchen is welcome a square table or round shape.
  • If the kitchen is small, use the mini format technique: a 2-3-hob stove, a dishwasher 40 cm wide, rather than the standard 60 cm, a small oven with a microwave function. You can also choose a small sink, for example, 45 cm wide.
