From the point of view of physics, black cannot be called color, since it is rather ... its absence. But in terms of interior design, black is one of the most important, powerful and at the same time ambiguous elements of the palette. Let's find out in what dose its use is permissible and how to design the interior of the black kitchen, as well as kitchens with furniture in the color of wenge, dark walnut, etc.
Features of interaction with space
More suitable for: large and bright spaces, male bachelor kitchens, as well as Scandinavian style kitchens, Art Deco, high tech, industrial, contemporary and minimalism (on the picture).
Positive properties: balances all colors in the spectrum and, at the same time, emphasizes them on the principle of contrast. Nature itself used a combination of black and bright colors to color dangerous bees, wasps and tigers, and man used it to create attention-getting signs and warning signs. On a black background, everything becomes clear lines. In addition, this color is combined with all the colors of the rainbow due to its neutrality, and also looks great with chrome, steel and black surfaces of household appliances, which are always in the kitchen. There is another unique property - it can visually move away objects or surfaces. So, strangely enough, the black ceiling in the kitchen will not seem low, and if white walls are pasted on three walls, and black on one wall, then the kitchen even in a small Khrushchev will become visually wider and larger.
And designers use black when they want to add a note of glamor, luxury and elegance to the interior. Keep in mind that it seems refined only in moderate quantities, in large - it looks frightening. The photo below shows a fine example of a black art deco design.
Negative properties: in large arrays, it begins to oppress and even drive into depression, in addition, it can visually reduce space and “weight” objects. And if you think that the black kitchen will be less dirty, then we hurry to dissuade you: on dark surfaces, for example, on the floor or apron in the color of wenge, fatty deposits, dust, chips and dirt are noticeable no less than on a light surface, but maybe even more.
Tips:
- If you are not ready to regularly wipe facades and apron, then avoid frosted facades, and no less brand glossy;
- If you still decide on a black apron, then let it be a practical tile or stone without gloss;
- The black floor is especially branded. If you really want it, then it is better to lay a “chess” tile or a tile with black inserts on it, such as, for example, in this combined kitchen in the Moscow Khrushchevka in the photo below.
- If you do not want to spend a lot of time caring for a headset, then a black and white kitchen will be the best choice, that is, a set with a dark bottom and a light top or vice versa. Examples of the kitchen in black and white are presented in the following selection of photos.

Rules and recommendations
- Monochrome black interior is unacceptable, but dark colors may well dominate if you have a large and well-lit kitchen, and you are ready for a very extravagant setting.
In other cases, it is better to use it as a background or an additional color accent.
- In the interior of a small kitchen, for example, in Khrushchev, black kitchen design is quite appropriate, but in moderation: if on the wall, then only on one, if in the headset, then only at the top or bottom, if on the floor, then only on it and in the decor. In the photo below, the floor in the kitchen-living room in Khrushchev is decorated with dark tiles to match the accent wall.
- Always add a third color to the two primary colors - balancing or, conversely, enlivening. For example, a red and black kitchen needs a contrasting white, and black and white can be complemented with absolutely any rainbow colors, but some combinations will be especially successful. This topic is devoted to the next chapter of this article.
Tips:
- Ordinary wallpaper can replace black and white photo wallpapers or trendy chalk wallpaper today;
- Black kitchen will become even more stylish and luxurious, if you fit into the interior gold accessories and accessories. Examples of such decor are presented in the photo below.
