Master class number 1: Curtains cafe with their hands on one-two-three
Curtains in the style of a cafe can be attached to the eaves using different fittings and different ways: on the grommets, curtain tape, rings with clips, on secret and decorative loops, etc. In this step-by-step master class, we offer to sew curtains with a pocket for the cornice - simple or decorated with frill tops.
What we need:
- Cut fabric (cotton, linen, cotton, combination fabric);
- Sewing machine and tailor accessories: ruler, scissors, pins, thread in the color of the fabric;
- Cornice (special telescopic for curtain cafes or made by hand, for example, from a fishing line or any lath / bar);
- Iron.
Step 1. Measurements, cutting and some math
- First you need to install the eaves so that you can immediately determine the length of the curtains and calculate the fabric consumption;
- If you are using natural fabric, it is advisable to wash it first and then iron it well. This should be done in order to cut the fabric already in view of its shrinkage after washing.
Fabric consumption can be calculated by the following formulas:
- The width of the cut fabric = (length of the cornice x 1.5) + 6 cm on the hem of the side cuts.
Note: the figure of 1.5 is an assembly factor for a fabric of medium density, for tulle you can take a factor of 2, then the folds will be more magnificent.
- The length of the cut fabric = The desired length of the curtain, that is, the distance from the eaves to the bottom edge of the curtains + 3 cm (or more) for the hem of the bottom + the length of the circle of the cornice + 2.5 cm for freedom and hem.
Notes: If the curtain cafes are set above the window opening, they should be of such length as to be about 10 cm below the sill. If you want the curtains to be installed inside the window frame, then their length should be such that the bottom the edge did not reach the window sill by 1-2 cm. If you want to make a pocket with a frill on top, then the eaves circumference should be multiplied by at least 2–2.5.
Step 2. Processing side slices
Now proceed to sewing, namely the processing of the side slices. This is done very simply: we twist the edge of the fabric to the wrong side 1.5 cm, for ironing convenience, iron again, then make the gate again with the same 1.5 cm, then we get the resulting hem, we pin with pins or iron and give the line close to the edge. In this way, you need to handle two side cut tissue.
Step 3. Processing bottom and top
Now we sew the bottom in the same way, but here you can make not one straight line, but a decorative double one.
Almost done! It remains only to form a pocket for the eaves.To do this: turn the fabric to the wrong side by the amount of pocket allowance, which you calculated earlier (eaves circumference + 2.5 cm for freedom and hem of the raw cut) and iron the fold. Then turn the raw edge by 1.5 cm and iron the bend again with an iron, after which we fix the hem with pins or basting and give a line.
How to make a pocket with a frill?
If you plan to sew curtains cafe with a decorative frill on top and pre-made a wide pocket, then you only need to pave an additional line on the level of the upper edge of the eaves.
Well, that's all, now you can insert the eaves into the pocket of the curtains and form a smooth assembly.
Master class number 2. Curtains cafe in 5 minutes
If you do not have the desire / opportunity to sew curtains cafes yourself, but there are a couple of beautiful clean cotton towels, then we suggest making curtains from them!
To do this, you only need to prepare the clips for curtains, attach them to the curtains, keeping the same spacing, and hang them on the eaves.
If necessary, you can shorten them by dissolving the factory seams, ironing and cutting the fabric, and then trim the edges in the manner described above.
The second way to shorten the length without sewing: just tuck one edge on the front side (if the pattern on the fabric allows) or seamy side and fasten the fold with clips as shown in the photo below.
