A window with a balcony door is a common combination for kitchens, which, nevertheless, often seems non-standard and difficult to decorate with curtains. Many questions arise. Will the curtains interfere with the balcony? Can the balcony block be decorated with Roman or roller blinds? Or maybe just leave it without curtains? In this article we will talk about how to choose curtains for the kitchen with a balcony, what are the ways to decorate a balcony block, as well as present 57 beautiful photo examples.
Option 1. Classic curtains
The classic curtains of two canvases in length in the floor can hang a balcony block of any configuration. They are good in that they unite the door and windows into a single harmonious composition, visually raise the ceiling due to vertical folds, expand the room (if you hang the curtains from wall to wall) and hide the shortcomings of the opening. On the other hand, curtains, tulle and drapes are somewhat more difficult to care for and use - to exit to the balcony you have to first pull up and move the curtain, and then, returning to the kitchen, push the canvas back into place.
But a selection of photos of interiors of modern kitchens with a balcony and classic curtains (scroll to the right).
Tips:
- In order to go to the balcony and move the canvases along the eaves, it was convenient, you can equip the curtains with an electric drive with remote control or just a curtain leash (it is a stick suspended on the last runner or ring). Also simplify the use of curtains will help holders: clamps, magnets, hooks with hooks.
- If under the window there is a working nightstand, a bar or just a wide window sill, then it is worth making it short curtain as shown in the photo below.
- It is desirable that the curtains are light and concise - without a thick assembly, ruff, lace and other decorations, complicating the cleaning and "mobility" of curtains.

Option 2. Curtains on the doors (or above them): blinds, Roman and roller curtains
Horizontal blinds, Roman and roller blinds are good because:
- Easy to maintain;
- Do not clutter the space;
- Allow you to adjust the degree of illumination;
- And most importantly - they do not interfere with going out onto the balcony, opening and closing the door;
- Blinds, Roman and roller blinds can further shade the room, if some curtains are not enough. They can also protect them from fading due to sunlight.
True, there are some nuances - without a combination with traditional curtains, roller blinds and blinds may look too laconic and even “office”.
Minimalistic interior from such simplicity will only benefit (see photo above), but in classic kitchen Blinds and “rolls” will be appropriate only in combination with curtains or tulle. In this case, it is desirable that the curtains do not close the passage, otherwise the advantage of short curtains will be lost. Below are photo examples of the design of windows with balcony doors with cassette roller blinds in combination with curtains.
In our opinion, the most versatile curtains for the balcony block are Roman curtains. They can be both translucent and dense, they can harmoniously fit into both the modern interior and the traditional interior, they will be good both on the windows and on the balcony door.
By the way, Roman curtains can hang only the window (a), and the door can be decorated either with a curtain or left completely without decor as in the interiors in the photo below.
Tips:
- If the window slopes are narrow and there is no transom, then blinds, roller blinds or roman blinds can only be hung on the doors. So, by the way, it is much more convenient to open the windows and the door.
- Do you want curtains to be super-practical? Choose roller blinds - they are impregnated with dirt and dust repellent compounds, easy to clean and do not fade in the sun.
- Curtains on all doors should be made of the same material and, if possible, of the same width.

Option 3. Designing a balcony block with one leaf
One curtain will harmoniously look in the design of a narrow balcony block or one balcony door without a window. The method is convenient in that it allows you to freely access the balcony, but if necessary, shade the room, stretching the canvas to the full width of the opening. Composition with a single canvas (even if it is a thick curtain) is easy and neat. However, such a window design requires perfect slopes - smooth and with high-quality finish.
By the way, in classical interiors, a balcony unit with one curtain may also look appropriate.
Tip:
- Making the balcony unit one curtain, special attention take a choice of eaves, because it will be visible most of the time.
Option 4. Balcony unit without curtains
A balcony block without curtains is an excellent solution, provided there are straight slopes and a window sill without any flaws. If the balcony / loggia is used very often (for example, if there is a dryer), and also if the kitchen is dark and oriented to the north, then the lack of curtains will bring some advantages.
Most harmoniously, windows without curtains look in modern kitchens, say, Scandinavian style as in the photo examples above. However, the lightweight classic fully allows windows without decor.
Tips:
- It is possible to compensate for the lack of curtains on the windows with a balcony door. indoor plants and accessories (watches, of pictures, candlesticks, etc.), as well as due to the abundance of textiles in the interior - carpet, pillows, upholstered furniture.
- If you still need to shade the windows sometimes, but you do not want to overburden the interior with curtains, we recommend installing cassette roller blinds on the doors of the balcony unit, which are hidden when assembled in a box and are almost invisible on the frame.
General recommendations
- The curtain rod and fasteners for windows with a balcony door should be, firstly, easy to use (to conveniently remove the curtains for washing and hang up again), and secondly, reliable, because they have to withstand heavy loads. Thirdly, runners, rings and eyelets should easily slide along a bar or profile.
- Kitchen curtains should be superpractical, easy to clean, not crumpling (for example, so that they can be fixed with a clip, and then dissolved). For this reason, we recommend choosing fabrics for sewing curtains of synthetic or semi-synthetic material (for example, a mixture of polyester and cotton).
- The curtains of the glazed balcony / loggia should be combined with the interior of the adjacent kitchen and, of course, with the curtains of the balcony block.
