Clocks in the kitchen - this is the main clock in the house, because they are needed and during cooking, and during the gathering of all household on their own business. And they can decorate the interior and demonstrate the taste of the hostess, so you should choose them consciously. Today we will talk about how to choose a clock in the kitchen with the help of 6 tips and 40 photo examples. But for those who like to do needlework, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the master-class on making wall clock for the kitchen with your own hands, which you will find at the end of the article.
6 tips on choosing hours
- Small kitchen - small clock, large - large
Big clock in a small kitchen clutter up the space, but in the spacious kitchen, kitchen-living room or dining room will show themselves in all their glory and will be visible from anywhere in the room.
The average and small hours in the big kitchen will “get lost” and will not look so impressive. But in a small room will be comfortable and compact.
- The universal size of the dial is 33-36 cm in diameter as in the photo below.
- "On duty" watches must be quartz
Mechanical watches are timeless classics, they are durable and are valued more than quartz ones due to a more complex mechanism and manual adjustment during assembly. Nevertheless, they have significant drawbacks - high cost, small selection of designs, inaccuracy of the course and the need for timely winding. Agree that it will not be very convenient to regularly monitor the work of the “on-duty” kitchen clocks and wind them up, especially if they are wall-mounted.
Quartz watches with batteries and affordable price, and "walk" more precisely, and do not require winding, and silent. And the design series in this category today is much more. You can choose copies from classical models, - for example, with a pendulum - to the most modern, including electronic ones.
- However, if you choose a clock in the dining room or in priority you do not put convenience in use, but beauty, durability and chic, then choose mechanical models. Most often, they have very high-quality bodies, excellent finishes and classic “functions” of a battle, a pendulum or a cuckoo.
- Check out the watches with additional features.
Choosing a clock in the kitchen, think about what additional features you may need:
- If you need them first of all for cooking, then buy a small electronic or regular clock with a timer as in the photo below.
- Pay attention to the weather station clock, if you grow houseplants or have, say, wooden floors and a kitchen set. Hygrometer and thermometer will help you to control the humidity and temperature of the air.
- Displaying the date and day of the week is a simple but useful feature in everyday life.
- The best watches for classic cuisine are wooden, with a round dial and Roman numerals
- For classic kitchen interiors (in style provence, baroque, empire, chebbi chic etc.) it is better to choose a wooden watch with a round dial, but not necessarily with a round case. Indeed, for example, watch cases with a traditional pendulum have the shape of a rectangle or ellipse.
- As for the numbers, the most traditional will be Roman, but the beautiful Arab will not spoil classic design.
- The case and dial of the watch in the classical style is preferable from natural wood, and not from the common MDF or plastic under the tree. At the same time, for the elegant and strict classics, for example, in the palace style, the tree should be polished, and for Provence and Chebbi chic styles - aged. The remaining parts (dial, hands, etc.) can be metal in the color of antique bronze or gold.
- For a classic-style dining room or for a very spacious kitchen, you can choose not a wall, but a floor clock with a pendulum, kettlebells, a fight or with a buffet and a bar.
- The best watches for the kitchen in a modern style - concise, but original
In modern interiors (Scandinavian style, in minimalism style, high tech etc.) the watch can be concise or, on the contrary, complex, but in any case, the original design is due to the texture, color, shape of the dial and case, as well as unusual divisions and hands. Modern watches can be made of plastic, wood, and metal.
- We do not recommend buying watches to the kitchen without divisions - they look interesting, but it’s inconvenient to pinpoint the cooking time on them or to find out how many minutes are left before leaving the house.

- Place the clock in a place where it can be seen both during cooking and during the meal
Where to put or hang the kitchen clock is most convenient? The most common places are:
- Over the dining table or over the bar;
- Above the door, arch or entrance;
- Over the hood (if it has a visor or allows you to hang the device high);
- On the shelf of the headset (but away / higher from the plate and sink).
Try to choose a place so that in the daytime there is no direct sunlight on the device. The following photo compilation presents some examples of the placement of hours in the kitchen.
Master Class
And finally, we present a master class on how to make a wall clock for the kitchen with your own hands.
Step 1. Prepare any basis for the manufacture of the dial. It can be anything: wood, plate, vinyl record, cardboard, polyurethane foam outlet or even an old colander. The main thing is that the workpiece fits in size to the hands of the clock mechanism and it was possible to drill a hole in it for fastening it.
Step 2. We mark the center of the dial and make a hole in it with the help of a drill / screwdriver (at low revs, so as not to damage the workpiece) or sewed. The diameter of the drill should match the diameter of the screw in the clockwork.
Step 3. If the material requires processing and decoration, then this should be done before installing the mechanism. As soon as the dial background is ready and dried, you will need to draw divisions or numbers on it (best of all with a stencil, so that you can do it carefully). However, if you wish, you can do without them. At the end of drawing the entire dial should be covered with a matte acrylic water-based varnish in 2 layers. Then the whole decor will become more durable and tolerant to wet cleaning.
Step 4. Now it is time to install the clock mechanism (you can buy it separately or remove it from the old / cheap watch). To do this, we separate the mechanism from the second, minute and hour hand and insert it into the prepared hole from the wrong side of the dial. Then on the face of the watch we put on the screw nuts, hour, minute and last of all the second hand (if there is one).
Step 5. Hooray! The clock for the kitchen is ready, it remains only to twist the arrows to make sure that nothing interferes with their rotation, insert the battery and hang the product on the wall.
