If you want to paint the glasses for yourself or as a gift, for a wedding or for a thematic party, you can be sure that you will get great pleasure from your creative work - after all, this is done easily, quickly and without expensive.
Before proceeding to the step-by-step master-class on painting your own glasses, you need to decide on the future design of your wine glasses, so we suggest that you take inspiration and draw on the original ideas of glass decoration in the next chapter.
The painting of glasses and wine glasses can be different according to the drawing technique, the degree of complexity, the use of materials and, of course, the subject matter.
Master class number 1: Glasses in the style of confetti
Wine glasses, decorated with small peas, look very festive and can be as elegant as in the photo below, and fun multi-colored. Circles are associated with bubbles of champagne or bright confetti.
Level of difficulty: very simple.
What you need: acrylic or contour paints on glass and ceramics, as well as ordinary nail polish (but acrylic paints are much more stable) or a special marker for painting dishes. To degrease glasses, prepare nail polish remover, degreaser or alcohol, cotton swabs, a pencil with an eraser at the end or a small solid synthetic brush for drawing, and cotton swabs and sticks for correcting the pattern.
Technique painting:
- Wash and degrease the glass thoroughly with alcohol or other means using cotton pads or a napkin.
- Now you can start applying circles. Squeeze out a little paint in a small container or just on the foil (paper, file).
Turn the glass over and start setting points from top to bottom, maintaining the same interval between them. You can draw points like in this master class, that is, starting from large to smaller, gradually increasing the distance between them. Otherwise, the points can be of the same size, different in color, and they can also form a pattern or pattern (point to point technique or peak), and also slightly overlap each other.
Tip:
- Large dots are conveniently put with an eraser from a pencil, and small dots - with a brush or a cotton swab with a pointed end like in the photo below (scroll).
- It is better to maintain the distance from the edge of the glass to the pattern of about 2 cm, especially if the paint is toxic.
- If you draw contours, you first need to practice on paper to put small, medium and large points at the same distance from each other and with the same degree of pressure on the tube.
- Now you need to let the paint dry. Methods of drying are largely dependent on the paint, usually the manufacturer indicates the drying time and firing instructions.
- As a rule, painting with acrylic paints or contours requires firing if you want to use glasses frequently and wash them in a dishwasher. To do this, put the glasses in the oven at a temperature of 150-170 degrees for 30 minutes, and then turn off the oven, and without removing the glasses from it, let them cool naturally;
- Markers dry 24 hours and do not need to be fired;
- Nail polish dries quickly, but the pattern will not last long, so for the decoration of gift or wedding glasses that you want to leave for memory, this option will not work. But for themed parties better paint is not found.
And here are the other ideas of painting glasses with multicolored peas, which will decorate any table setting at a fun party (scroll through the photo to the right).
Peas of gold, silver, white colors are more suitable for decorating wedding glasses.
By the way, the circles can be not only drawn, but also pasted. You can buy vinyl self-adhesive paper of the desired color and cut out of it with a hole punch or special scissors circles, and then gently stick them on the glass. The photo below shows the glasses decorated in this way.
Master class number 2: Art painting glasses
In this master class, we will turn glasses into flowers, because its leg is so much like a small stalk, and its cup is like a bud.
Level of difficulty: average.
What you need: any degreaser, cotton pads and cotton swabs for degreasing and pattern correction. And for drawing, prepare artistic synthetic brushes of different sizes, a plastic plate or a palette for mixing paints, as well as acrylic paints on glass and ceramics. If you wish, you can add a pattern with contour and stained glass paints, markers and glitter.
Drawing technique:
- Degrease the surface;
- We mix paints on a plate or palette, achieving the desired shades. In order to make the color pastel and delicate, color paint is mixed with white;
- Now we need to draw the stamens: set the dots with a narrow little brush or a cotton swab with a pointed end. The color of pollen can be black, yellow or orange. In our workshop, yellow is used to paint the stamens of the lilac Italian aster and black is used for sunflowers.
Further drawing of the flower will be layered, so you need to wait until the drawn stamens dry out. You can dry them naturally, leaving for 2 hours, or bake in the oven at a temperature of 150-170 degrees for 15 minutes.
- As soon as the drawn pollen dries, you need to draw the petals as shown in the photo below. If desired, draw the details - streaks and color nuances. Then you need to allow the paint to dry (see p.3).
- The last step is to draw the pedicel and stalk in green and bake our glass flower again, but now it's already 30 minutes - and then the paint will not “peel off” from the glass for a very long time.
Well, that's all, the decor of the wedding, gift or holiday glasses is finished.
In the photo below you can learn other interesting ideas of painting with floral and plant motifs (scroll).
Here are examples of glass painting with peacock feathers.
Also very popular themes of flora and fauna.
Glasses for a festive serving of theme parties can be decorated bright and fun.
Glasses as a gift or wedding can be further decorated with rhinestones, feathers, pearls, sparkles, ribbons and other decor.
Other ways and secrets of painting on glass: how to dry a glass with a painted foot and use a stencil or sketch
- If you want to completely paint over the base of the wine glass, that is, paint it and its bottom from the bottom, then you need to dry it in suspension or carefully putting it on a homemade paper design and four buttons as in the photo below.
- Painting on glass is easier to do with the help of a sketch-substrate, painted with your own hands or printed in the correct size on the printer. You can also use a pattern on a napkin.The paper with the image must be laid on the bottom of the wine glass, leveled and glued with scotch tape as shown in the photo.
Also in the painting on the glass do-it-yourself stencils. For this you need:
- Draw them yourself or print a picture from the Internet, and then cut them with a clerical knife;
- Buy ready-made stencils in the store for creativity, which is very easily glued and unstuck;
- You can draw stripes, geometric abstractions and simple patterns using the stencil principle using ordinary or masking tape;
- You can get the effect of openwork pattern if you use lace as a stencil.
Tip: you can apply through the stencil lettering or images with special matting paint on glass with the effect of frost or frost, which is sold in art or online stores. An example of such decor in the photo below.
Master class number 3: Stained glass painting
Stained glass painting on glass is a bit more complicated drawing technique, since stained glass paints, unlike acrylic ones, are much more fluid, and therefore difficult to apply. In addition, they are less wear-resistant, and mixing colors will be very difficult, as the paint dries very quickly on the palette. But they are more transparent and unusual, and in combination with stained glass contours, you can create the effect of a real stained glass.
Tip: this type of paint is different, for painting glasses, it is better to use water-based baked paint, rather than a toxic solvent.
